This is the journey we’ll take together:

Module 1 - Roots & Rhythm: Discovering Timba

We begin with the historical, musical, and cultural context to understand where Timba comes from, how it evolved, and why it sounds the way it does.

We’ll explore the influence of Son, Rumba, and Afro-Cuban roots, and how these traditions also shaped the way we dance.

We’ll explore the relationship between Timba as a musical genre and Casino as a dance expression, and how improvisation, flourishes, and footwork can enrich the way we dance.

Module 2 - Afro-Descendant Culture & the Rumba Complex

In this module, we dive into the cultural and spiritual roots of Afro-Cuban traditions in Cuba.

You’ll get to know the essence of Rumba and its three main styles, and understand how these expressions live inside Timba and give it its unique character.

Module 3 - Why Afro-Cuban Roots Matter

Here, we focus on feeling the music.

You’ll learn how to sense the energy of a song, recognize when something changes, and understand when it makes sense to incorporate Afro-Cuban movement.

Each rhythm carries its own energy, and when you move with intention, everything starts to flow more naturally.

Module 4 - Afro-Cuban Elements in Timba: Identification & Context

Using real song fragments, we’ll guide you in recognizing (through lyrics and rhythm) which Afro-Cuban context or tradition is present.

We connect these moments to traditional chants and rhythms, and introduce the basic movements associated with each one, so sound and movement start to make sense together.

Module 5 - Dancing Timba with Afro-Cuban Influence

In this module, we focus on application.

You’ll learn how to combine Afro-Cuban dances and movements with Timba in a way that flows naturally within the salsa count. Without forcing it, and without losing musical coherence.

Module 6 - Let’s Dance! Afro-Timba Musicality Choreography

As a final integration, you’ll learn one Afro-Timba musicality choreography.

This piece is designed as a celebration! A way to bring together everything you’ve learned and experience how roots, rhythm and musicality come together in movement.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need prior experience in Timba or Afro-Cuban dance?

Some experience with Timba (or Cuban salsa) is recommended so you can recognize the music and movements we talk about. 
You don’t need to be an expert: this program is designed to clarify what you already hear and feel.

Afro-Cuban and Rumba we teach from the basics.

Is this program for dancers or for teachers?

Both.
If you’re a dancer, this program will help you understand the music and dance with more intention.

Is this a dance technique or choreography program?

This program focuses mainly on musicality, understanding the roots, rhythm recognition and interpretation.


In module 5 you'll learn how to mix the Afro-Cuban moves with Timba and there is one Afro-Timba musicality choreography at the end as a way to integrate everything you’ve learned.

All videos are spoken in both English and Spanish, with subtitles in both languages included.
